Arankele Monastery & Forest

Arankele has a 6th century cave hermitage up a forested hillside. Constructed for the benefit of meditating monks, this secluded sanctuary features remnants of a bygone era while letting nature lovers discover a myriad of wildlife and birdlife. Also consisting of medicinal plants and herbs of the rarest kind, a trek through this forest would prove to be well worth the time and effort. Ruins of walking paths once traversed by monks in deep meditation would meet your eye upon entering. The area is now an archaeological site and can be conveniently reached from Amagi Aria.

Yapahuwa - Ancient Kingdom

Yapahuwa is situated close to the Cultural Triangle. This rock fortress that was built in the early 1300s was the capital of King Bhuvanekabahu I. It is similar in concept to the more popular Sigiriya. Having once housed the sacred tooth relics of the Buddha, the citadel which is Yapahuwa brings with it a colourful and well documented history. The steep staircase which leads one to the summit of this engineering marvel belonging to the ancient world is a highlight that must be experienced. Two impressively carved lions guard the entrance while breathtaking panoramas can be enjoyed while touring Yapahuwa and its many features. One will also find a museum containing stone carvings. Behind the museum is a cave temple, which contains some very old frescoes as well.

Muthurajawela Mangrove and Wetland

Teeming with countless species of wildlife including Herons, Egrets to even Saltwater Crocodiles, the Muthurajawela Mangrove and Wetland is a leisure traveller’s dream come true. Ideally situated in close proximity to the Negombo Lagoon, this wetland comprises of over 6,000 hectares of mangrove forests and marshes which numerous water birds and amphibians call home. Boat rides can be had here and a good time to head out would be during the morning.

Boat Safari at Dutch Canal

Arguably the best way to capture everyday life in Negombo; the Dutch Canal which has been said to stretch on for more than 100km is well known for providing exciting boat safaris and cruises. Anawilundawa Tank and Birds Sanctuary

Two tanks of a system of seven cascading types of tanks, designated as an internationally recognized Wetland, built during 12th century AD. This is an excellent habitat to see resident water birds. During the migratory season, especially in the months of November, December and January, a large number of migratory water birds, including the garganey and pintail duck can be seen in good numbers. On the way back, visit to Munneswaram Shiva Temple at Chilaw to see the splendour of Hindu culture in Sri Lanka (also Chilaw fish market).

Buddhist Temple Visit
